Jim Dempsey is senior policy advisor at the Stanford Program on Geopolitics, Technology and Governance and a lecturer at the UC Berkeley School of Law. From 2015 to 2021, he was Executive Director of the Berkeley Center for Law & Technology. From 2012 to 2017, Jim also served, after Senate confirmation, as a member of the U.S. Privacy and Civil Liberties Oversight Board, an independent agency within the federal government charged with overseeing the nation’s counterterrorism programs and advising senior policymakers on privacy and civil liberties issues posed by government data collection. From 1997 to 2014, Dempsey was at the Center for Democracy & Technology (CDT), a non-profit public policy organization focused on privacy and other issues of the internet age. He is the author of Cybersecurity Law Fundamentals (IAPP 2021) and a frequent contributor to Lawfareblog.com. Prior positions include assistant counsel to the House Judiciary Committee.
