Lauren Maffeo

Lauren Maffeo is the Senior Program Manager of AI/ML at the State of Maryland, where she helps state agencies responsibly and productively adopt GenAI to solve problems faced by their staff and constituents. She leads the State’s AI operations, training plan, partnerships, and Community of Practice. She previously led service design efforts in the Coast Guard’s first Chief Data and AI Office, and co-led product on the founding Digital Service team at Maryland’s Department of Labor, where she translated the State’s Time to Care Act into technical requirements to build Maryland’s first Paid Family and Medical Leave Program.

Lauren’s first book, “Designing Data Governance from the Ground Up”, was published by The Pragmatic Programmers and adapted into two LinkedIn Learning courses. She also wrote an essay for the book “97 Things Every Application Security Professional Should Know”, published by O’Reilly Media, and is a founding editor of Springer’s AI and Ethics journal. In her spare time, she loves watching and pretending to know all the rules of tennis, baseball, soccer…you get the point.
