Cybersecurity attacks and threats affect everyone. From local businesses and schools to critical infrastructure and democratic institutions, no sector is immune. What was once the concern of specialists has evolved into a shared societal vulnerability.
There is a widening gap between the growing cyber threat landscape and our collective capacity to defend against them. Small organizations face the same adversaries as large institutions but without comparable resources or expertise.
There are organizations dedicated to help but may operate in silos. The sector needs scaled cross-coordination and sustained collaboration in order to rise to the challenge of national cyber defense. Without better coordination, individuals, communities, and our nation remain vulnerable to cyber threats.
The solution
Cyber Civil Defense, launched in 2022 by craig newmark philanthropies, is a coordinated effort among cybersecurity organizations to address cyber defense as a shared responsibility. The network’s mission is to make a collective impact by aligning resources and efforts to better protect people, communities, and the nation.
Cyber Civil Defense represents a new model for collective action in the digital age, rooted in a strong network dedicated to community resilience. The goal is to ensure that knowledge, tools and support reach the places that need them the most.
Cyber Civil Defense is focused on building foundations for long-term cyber resilience by:
- Expanding cybersecurity education
- Growing an inclusive workforce
- Improving cybersecurity tools and services
- Building strong digital and civil infrastructure
- Raising awareness and shaping the ecosystem
Rather than working in silos, Cyber Civil Defense enables partners to act as part of a broader, unified network. By connecting people, organizations and resources, Cyber Civil Defense turns shared challenges into coordinated action and strengthens local defenses to contribute to a more secure and resilient nation.
Take 9
Supporting the Cyber Civil Defense network is the Take9 public service campaign. Take9 is a national public service cybersecurity campaign that encourages people to take a 9-second pause before clicking, downloading, or sharing online. Scams and frauds are growing more sophisticated by the day, but Take9 promotes consumer action to identify and avoid them through daily action.
Take9 advocates for cybersecurity action by the public and works to create the connective tissue between partner organizations in the Cyber Civil Defense network.
